TEKAMOLO – Word Order of Adverbial Elements in German

What is TEKAMOLO?

TEKAMOLO is a mnemonic device to help remember the correct order of adverbial elements in German sentences:

• TEmporal (When?) – Zeitangabe
• KAusal (Why?) – Grund
• MOdal (How?) – Art und Weise
• LOkal (Where?) – Ort

Standard order in a main clause:
Temporal → Kausal → Modal → Lokal

Explanation & Examples

A) Temporal (Wann? / Wie lange?) → Time

• Describes when something happens.
• Usually placed first in TEKAMOLO.

Examples:

• • • Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin. (Tomorrow, I will travel to Berlin.)
    • Letzte Woche war ich in München. (Last week, I was in Munich.)

B) Kausal (Warum?) → Cause / Reason

• Explains why something happens.
• Comes after temporal information.

Examples:

• • • Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin. (I stay at home because I am sick.)
    • Er lernt fleißig wegen der Prüfung. (He studies hard because of the exam.)

C) Modal (Wie?) → Manner / How?

• Describes how something happens.
• Comes after temporal and causal elements.

Examples:

• • • Ich habe die Aufgabe mit großer Sorgfalt gemacht. (I did the task with great care.)
    • Sie fährt schnell nach Hause. (She drives home quickly.)

D) Lokal (Wo? / Wohin? / Woher?) → Place

• Describes where something happens.
• Usually comes at the end of the sentence.

Examples:

• • • Er wohnt in Hamburg. (He lives in Hamburg.)
    • Ich fahre morgen wegen einer Konferenz nach Berlin. (I will travel to Berlin tomorrow because of a conference.)

TEKAMOLO in a Full Sentence

Standard Order:

Ich fahre morgen wegen meiner Arbeit mit dem Auto nach München.
(Temporal – Kausal – Modal – Lokal)

• Temporal (Wann?) → morgen (tomorrow)
• Kausal (Warum?) → wegen meiner Arbeit (because of my work)
• Modal (Wie?) → mit dem Auto (by car)
• Lokal (Wo/Wohin?) → nach München (to Munich)

Additional Grammar Rules in TEKAMOLO

If There is an Accusative Object → It Comes After “Lokal”

Ich habe gestern wegen der Party noch schnell im Supermarkt Lebensmittel eingekauft.
Yesterday, I quickly bought groceries in the supermarket because of the party.)

Dative Object → Directly After the Verb

Ich habe ihm am Montag wegen seiner Verletzung lange bei der Hausarbeit geholfen.
I helped him for a long time with housework on Monday because of his injury.

Verbs with Prepositions → Preposition + Object Go to the End

Er freut sich seit Tagen sehr auf die Party.
He has been looking forward to the party for days.

Modal Verbs → Infinitive at the End

Er muss morgen wegen seiner Klausur schnell mit dem Zug nach Hamburg fahren.
He must travel quickly to Hamburg by train tomorrow because of his exam.

Separable Verbs → Prefix at the End

Er sieht am Abend gerne in seinem Wohnzimmer fern.
He enjoys watching TV in his living room in the evening.

Perfect Tense → Past Participle at the End

Sie hat gestern Abend mit einem Freund im Restaurant gegessen.
She ate at a restaurant yesterday evening with a friend.

Accusative Object as a Pronoun → Before Dative Object

Er schickt es seinem Bruder morgen noch schnell per Post nach Berlin.
He is sending it to his brother by mail to Berlin tomorrow quickly.

Sentence Variations & Emphasis

You can shift word order to emphasize a certain element, but the verb must stay in second position:

Nach Hamburg fahre ich morgen wegen meiner Arbeit mit dem Auto.
(Emphasizing place – Hamburg)

Mit dem Auto fahre ich morgen wegen meiner Arbeit nach Hamburg.
(Emphasizing manner – by car)
