Present Tense: Stem-Vowel Changes in German (Unregelmäßige Verben)
One of the unique features of German verbs in the present tense is the stem-vowel change (also called “vowel alternation” or “stem-changing verbs / Ablaut”). This occurs in certain verbs where the vowel in the stem changes in the second and third person singular (du, er/sie/es). These changes are often referred to as “strong” or “irregular” verbs and affect their pronunciation and spelling.
Types of Stem-Vowel Changes
The most common vowel changes in the present tense occur in verbs with the following patterns:
- e → i (e.g., geben → du gibst)
- e → ie (e.g., sehen → du siehst)
- a → ä (e.g., fahren → du fährst)
These changes occur only in the du and er/sie/es forms; the rest of the conjugations follow the regular pattern.
