Subordinating Conjunctions in German (Unterordnende Konjunktionen)

Subordinating conjunctions (unterordnende Konjunktionen) connect a main clause (Hauptsatz) with a subordinate clause (Nebensatz). Unlike coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions change the word order in the subordinate clause.

Subordinating Conjunctions

  • The verb in the subordinate clause moves to the end of the clause.
  • The subordinate clause cannot stand alone and must depend on the main clause.
  • The subordinate clause can come before or after the main clause.
  • When the subordinate clause comes first, the verb in the main clause moves to the first position.

Example:

Ich gehe ins Kino, weil ich den Film sehen möchte. →  The verb “möchte” moves to the end of the subordinate clause.
I am going to the cinema because I want to see the movie.)

Umstellung:

Weil ich den Film sehen möchte, gehe ich ins Kino. →  When the subordinate clause comes first, the verb in the main clause (“gehe”) moves to the first position.

Difference Between “wann” and “wenn” in German

Both “wann” and “wenn” can be translated to “when” in English, but they are used in different contexts and are not interchangeable.

“wann” – For Questions and Indirect Questions

  • “Wann” is used in direct and indirect questions to ask about a specific time.
  • It is used when the exact time of an event is unknown.
  • It does not change word order in direct questions, but in indirect questions, the verb moves to the end.

Examples of “wann” in Direct Questions

Wann kommst du?
When are you coming?

Wann beginnt der Film?
When does the movie start?

Wann hast du Geburtstag?
When is your birthday?

Note: In these sentences, “wann” is asking for a specific point in time.

Examples of “wann” in Indirect Questions

I don’t know when he is coming.

Kannst du mir sagen, wann das Konzert beginnt?
Can you tell me when the concert starts?

Note: In indirect questions, the verb moves to the end of the clause.

Incorrect: Ich weiß nicht, wenn er kommt.

“wenn” – For Conditional Sentences and Repeated Events

  • “Wenn” is used when talking about conditions (“if”) and repeated or future events (“whenever”).
  • It introduces a subordinate clause, so the verb moves to the end of the clause.

Wenn du Zeit hast, ruf mich an.
If you have time, call me.
