Konjunktiv II (Subjunctive II) – Present Tense Formation

1. Introduction to Konjunktiv II (Subjunctive II)

The Konjunktiv II is used to express hypothetical situations, wishes, polite requests, and unreal conditions in German. It is often translated into English using “would”, “could”, “should”, or phrases like “If I were…”

Examples:

  • Ich würde gerne reisen. (I would like to travel.)
  • Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich eine Villa kaufen. (If I were rich, I would buy a villa.)

2. Formation of Konjunktiv II in the Present Tense

There are two main ways to form the present subjunctive (Konjunktiv II):

2.1 Strong (Irregular) Verbs

For strong (irregular) verbs, the simple past (Präteritum) stem is used, and an -e ending is added. Additionally, an umlaut (¨) is added to a, o, or u in the verb stem (if possible).

Formation Rules:

  1. Start with the simple past (Präteritum) stem
  2. Add an umlaut (if possible) to a, o, u in the stem
  3. Add the subjunctive endings

3. Modal Verbs in Konjunktiv II

Modal verbs in Konjunktiv II are also based on their Präteritum stem with added -e endings and umlauts.

  • Er müsste mehr lernen, um die Prüfung zu bestehen. (He would have to study more to pass the exam.)

2.2 Weak (Regular) Verbs in Konjunktiv II

For weak (regular) verbs, the Präteritum form is used, but it looks the same as in the indicative past. Because of this, speakers often prefer to use “würde + infinitive” instead (see Section 3).

Verb

Konjunktiv II

Since there is no difference between the Präteritum and Konjunktiv II for weak verbs, the “würde + infinitive” construction is preferred.

  • Ich würde das machen. (I would do that.) instead of “Ich machte das.”
  • Er würde mehr lernen. (He would study more.)

3. Alternative Formation: “Würde + Infinitive”

Since many verbs in Konjunktiv II look identical to their Präteritum (past tense) forms, German speakers often use “würde + infinitive” to avoid confusion.

Formation:

  • würde (Konjunktiv II of “werden”) + infinitive

Person

Würde-Form

Examples:

  • Ich würde ins Kino gehen, wenn ich Zeit hätte. (I would go to the cinema if I had time.)
  • Wenn er mehr Geld hätte, würde er ein Auto kaufen. (If he had more money, he would buy a car.)
  • Ich würde dir helfen, wenn ich könnte. (I would help you if I could.)

When to use “würde + infinitive”:
✔ With weak verbs (e.g., machen, lernen, sagen)
✔ When avoiding confusion with the simple past

4. Usage of Konjunktiv II

4.1 Hypothetical Situations & Unreal Conditions

Used in “if”-clauses (Wenn-Sätze) to express things that are not real.

  • Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich die Welt bereisen. (If I were rich, I would travel the world.)
  • Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich mehr lernen. (If I had more time, I would study more.)
4.2 Wishes & Desires

Used to express wishes that are unlikely or impossible.

  • Ich wünschte, ich hätte ein Auto. (I wish I had a car.)
  • Es wäre schön, wenn du hier wärst. (It would be nice if you were here.)
4.3 Politeness

Used for polite requests, offers, and suggestions.

  • Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? (Could you please help me?)
  • Ich hätte gern ein Stück Kuchen. (I would like a piece of cake.)
  • Würden Sie mir bitte sagen, wo der Bahnhof ist? (Would you please tell me where the train station is?)

Konjunktiv II – Past Subjunctive, “Würde + Infinitive,” and Contrary-to-Fact Statements

The Konjunktiv II (Subjunctive II) in German is used to express hypothetical situations, wishes, politeness, and contrary-to-fact statements in both the present and past tenses.

1. Past Subjunctive (Konjunktiv II – Vergangenheit)

1.1 Formation of the Past Subjunctive (Konjunktiv II – Vergangenheit)

The past subjunctive (Konjunktiv II Vergangenheit) is formed using:

  1. The Konjunktiv II form of “haben” or “sein” (hätte or wäre)
  2. The past participle (Partizip II) of the main verb

General Structure:

hätte / wäre + past participle

Rules for Choosing “haben” or “sein”

  • Use “haben” for most verbs, including transitive verbs (verbs that take a direct object).
  • Use “sein” for:
    • Verbs of motion (gehen, kommen, fahren, laufen, etc.)
    • Verbs of change of state (einschlafen, aufwachen, sterben, etc.)
1.2 Examples of Past Subjunctive Formation

Konjunktiv II Vergangenheit

machen (to do)

Ich habe es gemacht.

Ich hätte es gemacht.

sagen (to say)

Sie hat das gesagt.

Er ist nach Hause gegangen.

Er wäre nach Hause gegangen.

kommen (to come)

Sie ist spät gekommen.

Sie wäre spät gekommen.

fahren (to drive)

Wir sind nach Berlin gefahren.

Wir wären nach Berlin gefahren.

1.3 Usage of Past Subjunctive

The Konjunktiv II Vergangenheit is used to express:
Regrets about the past (Wishes that didn’t come true)
Contrary-to-fact statements about the past

Examples:

      1. Ich hätte mehr gelernt, wenn ich gewusst hätte, dass die Prüfung so schwer ist.
(I would have studied more if I had known that the exam was so hard.)
      2. Wenn du mir geholfen hättest, wäre ich schneller fertig gewesen.
(If you had helped me, I would have finished faster.)
      3. Ich hätte dich angerufen, wenn ich dein Handy-Nummer gehabt hätte.
(I would have called you if I had had your phone number.)

2. “Würde + Infinitive” Construction

Since the Konjunktiv II forms of weak (regular) verbs and some modal verbs are identical to their simple past (Präteritum) forms, German speakers often use “würde + infinitive” instead to make it easier and clearer.

2.1 Formation

würde + infinitive

2.2 Examples

Standard Konjunktiv II

“Würde + Infinitive” Alternative

Ich sagte das nicht.

Ich würde das nicht sagen.

Sie machte das anders.

Sie würde das anders machen.

Er spielte Fußball.

Er würde Fußball spielen.

2.3 When to Use “Würde + Infinitive”

✔ When using weak (regular) verbs
✔ When using modal verbs in present tense
✔ When making the sentence easier to understand

3. Contrary-to-Fact Statements (Irrationale Bedingungen & Hypothetische Situationen)

3.1 What is a Contrary-to-Fact Statement?

These statements describe things that did not happen in reality and are usually introduced by “wenn” (if).

Present Contrary-to-Fact (Hypothetical) Statements

For unreal conditions in the present, use Konjunktiv II (present):
Wenn + Subjunctive II (present), würde + infinitive.

Examples:

      1. Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich eine Villa kaufen.
(If I were rich, I would buy a villa.)
      2. Wenn du mich fragen würdest, würde ich dir helfen.
(If you asked me, I would help you.)
3.2 Past Contrary-to-Fact Statements

For unreal conditions in the past, use Konjunktiv II Vergangenheit:
Wenn + hätte/wäre + past participle, hätte/wäre + past participle.

Examples:

      1. Wenn ich mehr gelernt hätte, hätte ich die Prüfung bestanden.
(If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam.)
      2. Wenn du früher gekommen wärst, hätten wir den Film nicht verpasst.
(If you had come earlier, we wouldn’t have missed the movie.)
