Da- and Wo- Compounds
1. Introduction to Da- and Wo-Compounds
The da- and wo- compounds are commonly used in German to replace prepositional phrases. They function as pronouns referring to things (not people) and are commonly used in questions and statements.
Da-Compounds (Darauf, Damit, Davon, etc.)
- Used instead of prepositional phrases referring to things (not people).
- Formed by combining “da-” with a preposition.
- If the preposition starts with a vowel, “da-” becomes “dar-“ for easier pronunciation.
Wo-Compounds (Woran, Wofür, Womit, etc.)
- Used to form questions about things (not people).
- Formed by combining “wo-” with a preposition.
- If the preposition starts with a vowel, “wo-” becomes “wor-“ for easier pronunciation.
