What are Relativized Superlatives in German ?
In German, relativized superlatives are used to compare something within a certain group or category. These structures allow us to express that something is one of the best, worst, biggest, smallest, etc. within a specific context.
Example:
„Der neue James Bond ist einer der erfolgreichsten Filme des Jahres.“
(The new James Bond is one of the most successful films of the year.)
This phrase means that there are other successful films, but James Bond is one of them.
1. Structure of Relativized Superlatives
The construction follows a fixed pattern:
A. Singular Form
Einer / Eine / Eines + der + Superlative (genitive plural )

eine der bekanntesten Städte | (one of the most famous cities) |
eines der schönsten Häuser | (one of the most beautiful houses) |
Examples:
Er ist einer der klügsten Studenten der Universität.

Berlin ist eine der größten Städte Deutschlands.
(Berlin is one of the largest cities in Germany.)
Das ist eines der wichtigsten Probleme der Welt.
(That is one of the most important problems in the world.)
B. Plural Form

Examples:
Diese Bücher sind die spannendsten Krimis des Jahres.
(These books are the most exciting crime novels of the year.)
Die Alpen sind die höchsten Berge Europas.
(The Alps are the highest mountains in Europe.)
2. Declension Rules for Relativized Superlatives
The superlative adjective in these constructions always takes a weak ending (-en) because it follows a definite article (der, die, das).
Einer / Eine / Eines der + Adjective (-en) + Plural Noun (Genitive).

Examples:

3. Alternative Constructions
A. Using „zu den … gehören“
Instead of „einer der …“ we can also say „gehören zu den …“ (belong to the …).
Examples:
Dieser Roman gehört zu den bekanntesten Büchern der Welt.
(This novel is one of the most famous books in the world.)
Er gehört zu den talentiertesten Musikern seiner Generation.
(He is one of the most talented musicians of his generation.)
B. Using „mit Abstand“ for Emphasis
For stronger emphasis, we can use „mit Abstand einer der …“ (by far one of the …).
Examples:
Das ist mit Abstand einer der besten Filme des Jahres.
(That is by far one of the best films of the year.)
Sie ist mit Abstand eine der talentiertesten Autorinnen unserer Zeit.
(She is by far one of the most talented authors of our time.)
