Nominal and Verbal Style in general

• Nominal Style (Nominalstil): A sentence structure in which nouns (substantives) and prepositional phrases are used instead of verbs. It is common in academic, formal, and technical writing.
• Verbal Style (Verbalstil): A sentence structure where verbs are the primary element in expressing ideas. It is more natural, direct, and typical for spoken and informal written language.

Concessive Clauses in German (with obwohl, obgleich, wenngleich)

Concessive clauses express a counter-reason, a limitation, or a concession.
(Compare: causal clauses express a reason/cause.)

In a concessive structure, the subordinate clause states a condition or fact, but the main clause states a result that does not occur as normally expected.
→ The outcome is therefore an unexpected / illogical consequence.

Examples:

Causal (logical result):
Weil sie Peter über alles liebt, will sie ihn heiraten.
Because she loves Peter more than anything, she wants to marry him.
Reason + expected result.

Concessive (unexpected result):
Obwohl sie Peter über alles liebt, will sie ihn nicht heiraten.
Although she loves Peter more than anything, she does not want to marry him.
Counter-reason + unexpected result.

When applied to concessive clauses (Konzessivsätze), we can express contrast either with:

1. A full concessive clause (Verbalstil) using conjunctions like „obwohl“ (although), obgleich (although) or „wenngleich“ (even though).
2. A nominalized phrase (Nominalstil) using structures like „trotz“ (despite), „ungeachtet“ (regardless of)

Structure:
Conjunctions: obwohl, obgleich, wenngleich
Subordinate Clause + Main Clause OR Main Clause + Subordinate Clause

Nominalstil for obwohl-sentences

Trotz starken Regens geht er spazieren.
Despite the heavy rain, he goes for a walk.

Trotz intensiven Lernens besteht sie die Prüfung nicht.
Despite intensive studying, she doesn’t pass the exam.

Trotz meines Hungers esse ich nichts.
