Infinitive clauses (Infinitivsätze) in German are subordinate clauses that contain a verb in the infinitive form, usually with “zu”. They are used to connect two ideas without repeating the subject and often express purpose, intention, or result. An Infinitivsatz normally follows a main clause (Hauptsatz) and does not have its own subject (Subjekt); the subject is understood from the main clause.

Structure: Hauptsatz + , + zu + Infinitiv

Ich hoffe, morgen frei zu haben.
I hope to have a day off tomorrow.

Here:

Ich is the subject of the main clause.

The Infinitivsatz has no separate subject.

Examples:

→ Versuchst du die Aufgabe zu lösen? (Are you trying to solve the exercise?)

Ja, ich versuche, die Aufgabe zu lösen. (Yes, I try to solve the exercise.)

→ Lernt er Deutsch? (Is he learning German?)

Ja, er versucht, Deutsch zu lernen. (Yes, he tries to learn German.)

Rules of Infinitivsätze

No Subject (kein eigenes Subjekt)

The Infinitivsatz does not contain its own subject. The subject from the Hauptsatz is understood.

Example:

Ich plane, nächstes Jahr nach Österreich zu reisen.
I plan to travel to Austria next year.

Subject = ich

The Verb Stays in the Infinitive

Since there is no subject, the verb cannot be conjugated.

Example:

Sie versucht, das Problem zu erklären.
She tries to explain the problem.

The Infinitive Is at the End

The verb usually appears at the end of the infinitive clause.

Example:

Wir hoffen, bald eine Lösung zu finden.
We hope to find a solution soon.

Writing Rule:

„zu“ + Infinitiv are written as two separate words.

Example:

Ich habe vergessen, den Termin zu notieren.
I forgot to note the appointment.

Separable Verbs (Trennbare Verben)

If the verb is separable, „zu“ is placed between the prefix and the verb.

Types of Infinitive Clauses

Infinitivsatz with „um…zu“ (Expressing Purpose)

“um…zu” is used when an action is done to achieve a purpose (like “in order to” in English).

Structure: Hauptsatz + „um … zu“ + Infinitivsatz

Examples:

Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Deutschland zu studieren.
I learn German in order to study in Germany.

Er geht früh schlafen, um am nächsten Tag fit zu sein.
He goes to bed early to be fit the next day.

Sie spart Geld, um ein neues Auto zu kaufen.
She saves money in order to buy a new car.

Wir gehen in die Bibliothek, um für die Prüfung zu lernen.
We go to the library in order to study for the exam.

“ohne…zu” expresses an action that happens without another expected action occurring or it is used in place of negation.

Structure: Hauptsatz + „ohne … zu“ + Infinitivsatz

He left without saying goodbye.

Sie löste das Problem, ohne jemanden um Hilfe zu bitten.

Infinitivsatz with „anstatt…zu“ (Expressing Instead of Doing Something)

“anstatt…zu” is used to contrast two possible actions, where one is replaced by another or It is used when something occurs differently from what was expected.

Structure: Hauptsatz + „anstatt … zu“ + Infinitivsatz

Examples:

Anstatt zu lernen, spielt er Computerspiele.
Instead of studying, he plays computer games.

Sie ging spazieren, anstatt zu Hause zu bleiben.
She went for a walk instead of staying at home.

Difference Between „anstatt…zu“ and „stattdessen“

Both expressions contrast two actions, but:

• „anstatt…zu“ is used within a sentence as a subordinating structure with „zu + Infinitiv“.
• „stattdessen“ is an adverb and is used at the beginning of the main clause to introduce an alternative action.
