von + Dative (very common in speech)

Das Buch von Max → Max’s book
Das Auto von Hans → Hans’s car
Die Tasche von Felix → Felix’s bag

Weak Nouns in the Genitive Case (N-Deklination)

In German, a specific group of masculine nouns follows a different pattern in the genitive singular. These nouns belong to the N-Deklination (weak nouns) and take -en (or just -n if they already end in -e) in all cases except the nominative singular.

Characteristics of Weak Nouns

  • They are always masculine.
  • They mostly refer to humans or living beings (but not always).
  • They form their plural by adding -n or -en.
  • In the genitive singular, instead of adding -s or -es, they take -en.
  • They also take -en in the accusative and dative singular (not just in the genitive).
