Politeness and Softening Commands

Sometimes commands can sound too direct, so adding words like “bitte,” “doch,” or “mal” makes them softer.

„Bitte“ (please) makes the command more polite:

„Setzen Sie sich, bitte.“
Please sit down.

Using „doch“ or „mal“ softens the tone:

„Geh doch mal spazieren!“
Go for a walk, will you?

Type

Without Softening

Softer Version

English

Simple command

Mach die Tür zu!

Mach bitte die Tür zu.

Close the door.

Encouragement

Komm her!

Komm doch mal her!

Come here! (friendly)

Offering help

Probier das.

Probier das doch mal.

Try this (please).

Formal request

Geben Sie mir das Buch.

Geben Sie mir bitte das Buch.

Please give me the book.

For Softening Commands:

  • “bitte” (please) makes the command polite.
  • “doch” makes it sound like a suggestion.
  • “mal” makes it sound friendly and casual.

Formal vs. Informal Imperative Use

Situation

Informal (ihr)

Warte!

Wartet!

Warten Sie!

Differences:

  • du → Singular, informal
